Artichoke Capital of the World

Jill's Journal: A quick jaunt to Castroville today yielded a disproportionate amount of artichokes. The plants were absolutely everywhere, with artichoke fields stretching as far as the eye could see.

Sure enough, it turns out this is the “Artichoke Capital of the World.” The area even has an annual Artichoke Festival, which has been going on since the 1940s. In fact, its first Artichoke Queen was none other than Norma Jean before she went down in history as Marilyn Monroe. Only in California.

  1. As you head North, don't forget to stop by Gilroy, the garlic capital of the world.
