My Pockets are Fat

Jill's Journal: During my American Express years, I worked with a great guy named Andrew. Not only did he make every day fun, but on paydays he would exclaim with infectious glee, “My pockets are fat!”

Unfortunately, my wallet isn’t “fat” with money like Andrew’s on payday, but it is stuffed with supermarket loyalty cards (or frequent shopper cards). Remember the days when everyone got the lowest advertised price at the grocery store just for shopping there? Now they all seem to require one of those little cards to get the lowest prices. Each checkout bill can easily go down by $20 or more for a family of five. This adds up fast.

I hate those loyalty cards, but we need groceries no matter where we are and every region of the country seems to have different chains. And so, my wallet is now overflowing with cards from Kroger, Martin’s, Food Lion, Super Fresh, Acme, Stop & Shop, Shaw’s, and others. It’s a minor inconvenience in exchange for all the other fun things we get to do, to be sure, but when we settle down again someday, I’ll be delighted to shed those excess cards and not to have such a “fat” wallet.

Get a little key ring to put them on so you don't have to carry them with you except when you go to the store. They drive me crazy too!

There's an app for the android phones that allows you to scan all your cards into the phone. Then, you have the checker wave the phone's screen over the scanner to input the loyalty cards.

Move to San Antonio! HEB (our only grocery store) doesn't require a loyalty card...

Don't tempt me! You know I have a fondness for both San Antonio and living near you. :)
