Jill's Journal: Is this unbridled joy at being done with the school year or what? One day into our summer and we’re just so…happy! The teacher most of all (shhh, don’t tell the kids that).
This is the view of downtown Eugene from the top of Skinner’s Butte, a local landmark. It’s either a really big hill or a really tiny mountain, depending on your perspective. Eugene Skinner is the man who founded Eugene. He built a cabin here in 1846 and people called his settlement “Skinner’s Mudhole.” By 1850 he had established a trading post and an official post office. In 1862, the town was officially named Eugene. It’s now the second-largest city in Oregon. We like it here – the downtown is charismatic and the climate is temperate, especiallly during the summer. Did I mention the climate? It’s a beautiful 70s during the day with (this is key) NO HUMIDITY! It’s in the mid-40s at night. I'm always on the cold side, so I'd like it a little warmer, but hey, beggars can't be choosers. Rob thinks it's bliss. It is definitely beautiful.
