Wild, Wild West

Jill's Journal: Most of the time I’ve spent previously in Nevada has been in Las Vegas, land of glitz and more glitz. Reno and Carson City have their share of casinos and a little bit of glitz too. Imagine our surprise yesterday to be driving on a major road on the outskirts of Carson City and to suddenly spot a herd of wild Mustangs.

There they were, just hanging out like it was the most normal thing in the world.

I’ve always heard about wild horses in Nevada and hoped the girls would be able to see some. We never dreamed it would happen so easily, on our first full day in Carson City! It was a thrill.

While out of the car snapping pictures of the horses, I noticed this sign…can you read the last line in pink? It says, “No Sex Required” and certainly piqued my interest. We had to head down the road. The signs got more risqué.

At the end of the road was the “Moonlite Bunny Ranch,” a real, honest-to-goodness, fully sanctioned, licensed, legal, operating brothel! We are most definitely in the wild, wild west. Nevada is the only state in the Union which has legal prostitution (and only in certain counties).

After our unexpected little detour, we spent the day at the hilarious “Outhouse Races” in Virginia City, which I’ll share more about soon. This is absolutely the wild, wild, wonderful West.

But in the meantime, Madelyn lost her second tooth in three days. Isn’t she adorable with a big, gaping hole where her top teeth used to be?

Unfortunately, she lost it during dinner and somehow managed to swallow it. Poor thing; she felt terrible she didn’t have a tooth to give to the Tooth Fairy. She had me transcribe a note using her exact words:
“Dear Tooth Fairy,
I’m sorry that you couldn’t take my tooth because I accidentally gulped it down, but could you still give me my money? Please (because I want to be polite).
Love,
Madelyn”

Jill, I have driven the roads around Carson City numerous times in my 30 years at Tahoe and only saw the wild mustangs once in that time. You are very fortunate to have seen them. They really are beautiful animals and I always hope people appreciate them and do them no harm. Bobby honey, you have now made the second most infamous drive to the parking lot of one of Nevada's most famous brothels. It only took you 23 years and Dad wasn't driving you there on a dare from me. Congratulations you didn't enter either building but have the distinction of saying I've been to both Mustang Ranch and Moonlight Ranch

Andee, it was such a treat to see the Mustangs. I was more excited than the girls were -- after our time last summer on Assateague and Chincoteague, they practically think wild horses are a dime a dozen!

And now I see that Madelyn has lost TWO teeth! Is it easier to drink thru a straw, Madelyn, now that you have a space to fit it in? You are so cute. Don't worry, I know the Tooth Fairy knows you lost a tooth and she will find you!! Right, Mommy?? I noticed you saw some wild Mustangs ~ WOW, I bet that was fun to see them so close to you. Love to you and your sisters, Beppy

What a big day, wild mustangs AND missing teeth! I must say I would have sat ther all day looking at those mustangs. I'm pretty sure Bug was from Oregon or Nevada, can't remember for sure, but I net I could dig it up somewhere.
Madelyn, Liz lost one of her teeth before she got it under her pillow and the tooth fairy was just fine with that. Love you guys!

Beppy, Madelyn absolutely LOVED your comment! She giggled daintily with her hand held over her mouth while I read it to her. :) She says a straw for her morning smoothie is easier to drink through now and thought you were so clever for realizing that. She has a cute little lisp all of a sudden, but those new teeth are already growing in, so I don't think it'll last long. She does say it's harder to talk without those teeth (not that it stops her!)!

Gretchen, I hope you know I thought of you and Bug the whole time we saw the wild horses! In fact, the whole reason I put three snapshots of them up here (instead of just one) was because of YOU! Wish you could have been here to see them yourself...you were definitely with me in spirit. :)

I have to laugh at Andee's comment. I was in my early teens (13 I think) and we were on our way back from vacation. My friend Dell was with us, and we were joking about wanting to stop at the Mustang Ranch on the way back. Well, Mom & Dad called our bluff and pulled up right out front and told us they'd wait in the car for us. We were too shocked to move.

So I have to laugh at all this, especially Gary's comment (and my Mom's)... story:

On my birthday (I'd say 16th, but I'm not entirely sure) my family had dinner in Reno (the usual) and then as a joke that I repeat... "My Dad drove me up to the Mustang Ranch as a birthday gift. We talked about it all the way up there. We pulled into the parking lot and..." And that's where the story is funny - My mom and sister were in the car, never had an inkling of thought about getting out - it was a family joke for a long time, but I can still picture it in my head (back when Conforti was running it)... fun(ny) times.

I still tell the story sometimes about how my Dad took me to Mustang Ranch for my birthday... The rest of the story, which I don't tell - well, that's what makes me smile. :)

Mom, One time I did walk in 'a ranch'... On my way home from Arizona I ran across a disabled vehicle - cops from UNLV had a breakdown, so I drove until I found a lit house... well... it was lit-up (at 4AM), and a trailer, and a (w)house. I'll never forget waking them up to call for help for those guys - CB radio -- The Housemother (exactly as expected) and one, interested, say-hi, workerbee. I left after reporting the problem and getting the local sheriff on the CB, but it is all still funny to me. Storey County... fun(ny) times.
