Newry’s Covered Bridge

Jill's Journal: Only nine of Maine’s 120 covered bridges built between the mid 1800s to early 1900s have survived history. This one, called the Artist’s Covered Bridge over the Sunday River in Newry, was built in 1872 and closed permanently to vehicular traffic in 1958. It’s considered one of the most picturesque in Maine and is a favorite of painters and photographers. It is said more paint has been used to recreate it on canvas than has ever been actually painted on the sides of the venerable structure.

The 87-foot covered bridge is striking even in today’s wintry weather and fog, so I imagine it’s that much more beautiful amidst fall foliage or even greenery.

You have no idea how much I adore covered bridges. I absolutely LOVE them. There is one in NJ that I visit everytime I go up there. They are just this fantastic piece of the past. Keep sharing those pictures!
Love you and Miss you.

p.s. Liz is having her first birthday party sleepover during her birthday weekend and we were sending out the invitations this past weekend and she was very sad she couldn't send one to Ms. Erika. (Steve swears he's leaving the house that night!!)

Thanks Gretchen -- I love them too! There's just something about them.

Oh my goodness -- first birthday party sleepover. You are a very brave woman!! How fun! Wish we could be there; what memories you're going to make. We'll be thinking of you and there in spirit! (Although Steve might be on to something by escaping that night...) Ha ha!!
