Monterey Bay Aquarium

Jill's Journal: Recognized not only as the top aquarium in the United States, but as one of the very best in the world, the Monterey Bay Aquarium is simply a magical place. We were thrilled to be able to take the girls there and knew they would love it; they in turn had been looking forward to it almost as much as they’re looking forward to Disneyland (okay, maybe not quite that much). We also had an extra treat for the special day: Kristi and Adam drove north to join us.

First, lunch in a random parking lot. Who knew the Subaru trunk could be so cozy?

The Aquarium itself is housed in the style of a former sardine/squid/tuna cannery right on the bay. It took seven years to convert/rebuild the massive structure into one of the world’s premier aquariums, which opened in 1984. The efforts were clearly worthwhile: the Aquarium hosts just shy of two million visitors annually. Over 550 species of sea life are exhibited in more than 100 tanks. More than 2,000 gallons of sea water directly from the bay are pumped into the tanks per minute, 24 hours a day.

No need for any more random facts from me; instead a few random photos of the wonderful day are enough.

Kristi and Adam stayed until well into the night. They helped us tuck the girls into bed – I love how much the girls love them! – and then the grown-ups enjoyed sushi and laughter and a campfire and maybe a few bottles of wine and definitely a lot more laughter.

Rumor has it that Kristi and I get a little goofy when we’re together…nah, I just don’t see it. :)
